Magical India, Third Culture Mothering

Turmeric Ice-Cream

The Edible Gold

Turmeric is an ancient spice native to Southwest India and has been used for over 2,500 years, it belongs to the ginger family. The main phytochemicals that give it so many health benefits are called curcuminoids, one of which gives it that special golden/orange colour. Turmeric is best known to be antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory. Also used as a natural dyeing agent for clothes. These are some of its many benefits:

  • Stabilizes mood
  • Supports healing of wounds
  • Soothes irritated tissue
  • Balances blood sugar
  • Joint support
  • Inhibits stomach’s ulcers

*During pregnancy it should be used in small quantities as it stimulates contractions of the uterus.

This is a great treat for children especially during the Autumn and Winter seasons when the environment gets cold and moist, and our immune systems weakens due to the changes in the environment, and the elements that are dominant in these seasons. I came up with this recipe because I needed Gaia to consume Turmeric, but how? the taste is pretty pungent and there is no way she would be eating “yellow rice” everyday… unless its ICE CREAM!!! which she will eat everyday.

PREP: 10 MINS – Freeze: 1 hour – YIELD: 4-6 popsicles

INGREDIENTS
1 cup of mango
1 cup of banana
1 tsp of turmeric paste
1.5 cups of coconut (or water)

PREPARATION
Mix all ingredients in blender. Fill in popsicle containers, and freeze, OR you can make 2 large smoothies.  You can also replace mango with papaya, however, for children the sweetness of mango and banana covers the pungent taste of turmeric. The little ones love eating this ice cream. My daughter loves eating it! And little does she know she is absorbing the health benefits of Turmeric.

Super Healthy Tips: You can replace water for coconut milk. or even better, if you have it at home -the golden milk AKA breastmilk. By using our amazing mama juice, our little ones will sure get all the antibodies we make to help them fight germs and other bacteria. I suggest avoiding cow milk because dairy will increase the production of mucous in the body.  Thus, it is essential to avoid yoghurt, cheeses and milk during these two seasons. Look for alternatives such as almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, coconut yoghurt, clarified butter (Ghee), cashew cheese, or any other vegan choices.
